Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Fairest One of All (for the Family Room)?

Black round wall mirror

Years ago, we had a locally owned home interior/floral shop that I loved. It was around the time I was in my 20s and first living on my own. I couldn't necessarily afford to buy decor from there to furnish my apartment, but I did, and I loved everything. I even still have a mirror that I purchased from there hanging in my bedroom. Is that mirror my design taste anymore? Not necessarily, but as discussed in the upholstered bed frame blog post, my bedroom is long overdue for a refresh and a re-design is on the looonnngg list of future updates.

In the meantime, as per usual, my brain is overflowing with ideas, and one is to replace the mirror in my bedroom with one that is currently hanging in our family room. It is an antique wooden mirror painted navy blue, which would go along nicely with the theme I'm designing in my head for the bedroom. So, what does this mean? Now I "need" a new mirror for the family room.

I find my taste now leaning toward a transitional style - a mix of traditional and modern elements. I'm envisioning a sleek, simple black metal mirror to replace the more massive navy mirror. It hangs above a rustic, distressed, cream-colored cabinet. The navy one measures 42.5" x 30.5", and it does look proportionate to the cabinet, so the new one will have to be relatively similar in size. It will also need to be hung horizontal, meaning if it includes any decorative detailing, the details will need to be on the long side of the mirror.

Also, per usual, my first go-to place to shop is Amazon. I'll admit it. I am a bona fide Amazon-aholic. Yes, I would much rather shop and from small, family-owned businesses, like the local shop from long ago, but there are no shops like that in our town anymore. Unfortunately, with everything else in today's fast-paced world, convenience usually wins out, and Amazon is just quite simply so.dang.easy.

Now that the stage is set, let's browse some nice, black framed mirrors from Amazon.

1. The Weer 40x30 Inch Black Framed Mirror is simple in design, but maybe due to the product photos, it might be too bathroom-ish. The frame material is aluminum, so it should be a sturdy mirror. With 313 ratings at 4.6 stars and a $50 off coupon at the time of this post, it could still be a contender.

2. Another near identical rectangular option with a 4.7-star rating and 2,661 reviews is the Andy Starr 40x30 Rounded Corner Rectangular Mirror. The description has the frame material listed as stainless steel, so it should also be sturdy. I may have to put this one on my master bath update wish list.

3. A style from the same brand as the previous option, the Andy Star 40x24 Modern Black Mirror offers something a little different with its oblong shape, but once again, it's giving me bathroom vibes. I believe I'll need something a little taller than 24", but I do like that this is also made of stainless steel. It currently only has 36 ratings, but at a perfect 5.0 stars, it's worth looking into.

4. The shape and simple frame of the Umbra 37" Round Wall Mirror with its sleek style would work in any room. The description lists the frame material as rubber, which seems practical for a bathroom but may not quite be the design I had in mind for our family room. It is rated high at 4.7 stars with 5,810 reviews, so that is promising.

5. Another round option, the Growson 32" Metal Frame Mirror lists the frame material as iron, which is has always been a favorite material for wall art. I think this would look nice in our space, but it could be too small in width for the large wall space.

6. In the media cabinet blog post, I mentioned that I was leaning away from farmhouse style, but I do like this Windowpane Black Arched Mirror by Wamirro. The frame material is iron, and it definitely leaves the bathroom vibes behind. Currently there are only 76 ratings at 4.3 stars, so it could be a possibility.

7. This style will not work for me because of the height, but I had to include the Arched 24x36 Rustic Mirror by Deanurs. I prefer the arch on the shorter side as in this design, but it will not work for what I need. The frame material is metal, and it is rated 4.3 stars. With only 41 ratings currently, I would prefer that it had a few more reviews.

8. The Rectangular 24x36 Windowpane Mirror by Suidia could possibly be the one. It does only have 30 ratings, but at 4.9 stars, I'll still consider it because it may be the perfect style. I will refer to this mirror as a Pottery Barn dupe because there is a mirror similar in style and size on their site that is priced over three times as much as this one. My only concern is that the size may be a tad small, so I'll need to do some measuring.

9. Well, let me backtrack a little. I'm really digging this 27x39 Wall Mirror by QuiJun. I appreciate that it is a little different from the other four windowpane styles, and it's the least farmhouse-y. Maybe what I like most about it is that the lines are a little more modern with the asymmetrical panes, and its larger in size than the other rectangular mirror by Suidia. It has 79 reviews, rated at 4.5 stars, so it might have moved up on my list.

10. The Ornate Baroque 36x30 Mirror by Wamirro is taking me back to my traditional style roots and also giving a little Victorian or French Country vibe. It is more expensive than most of the other options, but with the detail in the design, it does give an elegant look. It currently has 100 reviews with a 4.6-star rating. Hmm, once again I have no idea what I want.

11. When I showed the Minutte Wall Mirror by Kate and Laurel to my husband and daughter, it got mixed reviews. My husband thought it was okay and like me, appreciated that it was different; but my daughter is an old soul, and she loves antique decor with ornate details such as the Ornate Baroque, so it was a definite no for her. The Minutte can be hung either vertically or horizontally, so it would work, but I'm just not sure I'm ready to step that far outside the box and take the risk. It is pretty, and I do like it, and with 638 ratings at 4.5 stars, it does seem to be a nice piece.

12. Since I'm already outside the box, I'm going to throw another round mirror option into the ring for consideration, the Madison Park 36" Round Decorative Wall Mirror. I've been seeing these beaded detailed mirrors for a while now, but primarily constructed of wood and in wood-toned finishes. This style is made of iron and has 410 reviews at 4.6 stars. It is also a much less expensive, smaller-in-size dupe of a 44" Pottery Barn mirror priced nearly four times as high at $699.

Well friends, once again, my brain and my style has gone down many different avenues trying to decide on a perfectly styled mirror for our family room. Which would you choose if you were looking for something a little traditional, maybe a little modern, or maybe a combination of the two?
