A New Media Console/Cabinet? Well, maybe one day.

Media Console Cabinet TV Stand

I am very indecisive when it comes to design elements in our home. Well, I'm actually very indecisive about most things, but that's a blog post for another day. There are many aspects I would love to change around our house, but lately I've been a little fixed on replacing the big, brown monster - the sectional in the family room.

The idea of a new sofa of some sort leads me down the rabbit hole of updating nearly everything in the room. From new furniture and rearranging the layout, to new paint on the walls, a new rug, a new fireplace mantel, new wall art...the list goes on and on. My brain gets exhausted with all of the ideas flowing through it.

Rather than give my mind an unnecessary workout, this blog gives me an outlet to put all of my ideas in one place. Here in this post, I will thrash out my thoughts on media cabinets/consoles, as I embark on my quest to someday defeat the big, brown monster.

My Taste - Then

The television, cable box, and other media components need a home. Many homeowners with a fireplace choose to hang their television above the mantel. Our fireplace has a hearth, making its opening and the mantel higher than those that sit directly on the floor. This, along with no wall space next to the fireplace to store the items, makes a media cabinet the more practical option for our TV and accessories.

I purchased a new cabinet from Wayfair in 2020 and at the time, I was still on board the modern farmhouse-style train. The media cabinet/console I purchased is no longer on their site, but I did some browsing on Amazon for some similar styles. There's a nice selection of 4+ star-rated farmhouse cabinets/consoles available, for those in the market.

My Taste - Now

Modern farmhouse is still a very nice style, but rather than light creams and grays, I am more drawn toward dark colors and wood tones. I have always loved blues, especially navy, and now I find the brown hues of walnut and light oak appealing. These tones also complement nicely with neutral walls, which are a common transitional style element. Here are some cabinets from Amazon that have caught my eye.

Here are my ramblings and thought processes about the various cabinets:

1.  If we go the route of a simple TV stand/console, I love the warm wood tones of the Cochere Media Console. Its traditional shape with a modern flair makes it right in line with the transitional style. This model is not wide enough for the family room at only 58 inches, but something similar on a larger scale would work nicely.

2.  You'll notice in other posts that I tend to gravitate toward the color blue, especially navy. I love the color, but the Matin Svensson cabinet is a little more traditional than I prefer now. I currently have a smaller version of this cabinet in a shade of blue-gray in my entry that I purchased several years ago.

3. With its mid-century elements and dark walnut tone, the console by Jyed Decor Store is a beautiful cabinet. As with the Cochere, I don't believe it would be wide enough for our family room.

4. The Contour TV Stand by Modway with its curved lines, long legs, and mid-century modern style is very appealing. This particular cabinet is not wide enough, but it does come in a 63" version as well.

More Options

Here are a few more options that I won't go into detail about, but there are some really nice styles available on Amazon with above 4-star ratings.

I know, my taste now is a little all over the place: a little modern, a little traditional, and even still a little farmhouse mixed in there. In the end, it may be quite some time before I have the opportunity to replace the big, brown monster and update our family room; but when the time does come, at least I will have a head start on media cabinet shopping.
